Welcome to Hemochromatosis Clinics of Alaska...
Hemochromatosis Clinics of Alaska is now open!

Offering the first specialty clinic in Alaska dedicated to the management of Hereditary Hemochromatosis and other phlebotomy-dependent illness,
Norman D. Means, MD, FCAP  is proud to announce the opening of Hemochromatosis Clinics of Alaska (HCAK).

As Medical and Laboratory Director of the Blood Bank of Alaska, Dr. Means has received numerous requests from patients and physicians for more active involvement of the Blood Bank of Alaska in their patient's therapeutic phlebotomy care.   Unfortunately, Blood Bank of Alaska is prevented from providing this level of service due to the complex legal and regulatory environment surrounding blood centers, as well as numerous other factors.

HCAK is now available to meet the demand of the local community for the provision of therapeutic phlebotomy, and the management of Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HHC) and certain other conditions. Dr. Means is fellowship trained in Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking, and has years of experience in managing phlebotomy-dependent disorders.

For Alaska patients, HCAK offers the first comfortable and private physician office environment for your periodic blood draws, with physician supervision and skilled, experienced phlebotomists.   Best of all, HCAK can now bill your insurance to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.

HCAK also offers Alaska physicians and midlevel providers the opportunity to refer your patients to a dedicated specialist clinic for the management of HHC, as well as consultative assistance in the management of other phlebotomy-dependent illnesses.

If desired, physicians and midlevel providers may choose to refer patients to HCAK for therapeutic phlebotomy services
ONLY, and continue to manage their patients' care, while simultaneously reducing their patients' out-of-pocket expenses .  This service is essentially identical to the level of service
currently offered  by the Blood Bank of Alaska.
