Norman D. Means, MD, FCAP medical director of HCAK also serves as the the Medical and Laboratory Director of the Blood Bank of Alaska. Dr.
Means received his A.B. in the Biological Sciences from the University
of Chicago in 1987, and is a 1993 graduate of Indiana University School of
Medicine. He did his internship in General Surgery at the University of
Tennessee, remaining there to complete a
residency in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. He then went on to pursue a
Fellowship in Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking at The University
of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, which included extensive experience in the management of phlebotomy-dependent disorders. Finally, Dr. Means completed the Duke
University Family Medicine Residency in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
In his varied career, Dr. Means has had several thousand hours experience in emergency medicine, as well as extensive inpatient and outpatient medical practice. He is licensed in 5 states and has been in practice since 1994. Dr. Means is a published medical researcher and has presented his original research findings at numerous medical meetings. He holds 3 board certifications, in Family Medicine, Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology, and is board-eligible in Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking.
Dr. Means is also proud to serve Alaskans as the Medical and Laboratory Director for the Blood Bank of Alaska. In 2008, Dr. Means was elected a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists. He maintains a busy clinical practice in the Midtown Anchorage area.
The proud father of 4 children, Dr Means is married to Tammy Means, RN, BSN, MBA. He likes to fish, hunt, read (especially history) and play guitar when he is not attending Little League games and school concerts.
